Together with its cross borders partners, LifeTechLimburg and Hasselt University, Maastricht Instruments organized the Interregio Technology meeting on October 5th. Theme of this network meeting was 'Internationalization in life sciences. Since the Limburg life sciences are relatively young and many biotech companies are still in the R&D phase, it seems that going international is not at issue in this sector. The successful examples of internationalization that LifeTechLimburg presented during this meeting, however prove the contrary
More than 100 participants coming from industry, academia and hospitals were presented an interesting mix of presentations, success stories from companies, short pitches. And off course plenty of networking opportunities. As an overall introduction to the program, Professor Piet Pauwels (dean of the faculty of economics, Hasselt University) translated his research on internationalisation into practical hints and suggestions. Among other things, he pointed out the importance of international business for the growth of an organization and he dismissed a few 'excuses' so as "I don't have the resources to go international" or "going international is only for larger companies and not certainly not for an SME". To end his presentation, professor Pauwels gave some valuable tips such as be global in a dedicated niche and Think about your international business right from the start of your product and company.
These conclusions were then illustrated by success stories of internationalization of Limburg companies such as Olivier Wouters from Medinvents, Mario Fleurinck from Melotte and Alexander Ummels from Technomed. Kathleen Smolders of the Innovation Centre concluded the presentations by presenting an overview of the (financial) support for cross border cooperation from the Interreg project Crossroads.
The interregio technology café also included 9 pitches : In less than two minutes each pitcher presented their technology offer or request for collaboration.
This Interregio Technology café was made possible with the financial support of the European fund for Regional Development (LTL+- objective 2 and TTC - Interreg EMR), Flemish and regional funds and the foundation LSM.
